No. If deemed necessary, your healthcare provider will prescribe you the iron medication for infusion. Prescriptions can be sent directly to your pharmacy, provided to you in person, or included in our optional Referral & Prescription Form. After obtaining your prescription, you can book your infusion appointment here.

There is an on-site walk-in clinic that can help arrange bloodwork. Based on your bloodwork results, the physician may prescribe you IV iron medication.

Come well-hydrated and have a light meal before your appointment to help preventlightheadedness. Wear loose, comfortable clothing with sleeves that roll up easily, and feelfree to bring water, a small snack, and something to read or watch during your visit. You’realso welcome to bring a support person if you’d like assistance or company.

We exclusively use Monoferric® (ferric derisomaltose) or Ferinject® (ferric carboxymaltose) for our infusions. Unlike older products such as Venofer®, which require multiple smaller treatments, Monoferric® and Ferinject® can usually be given in a single larger dose. This means your iron levels can be restored more quickly, with fewer visits and greater convenience, while having an equivalent safety and side effect profile.

Yes. Iron infusions are commonly used and well tolerated. Like any medical treatment, there is a small risk of side effects. Our team monitors you closely during and after your infusion for safety.

The infusion usually takes 15-30 minutes. We’ll also monitor you afterward to ensure you’re feeling well before you leave.

Most people do very well. Some may notice temporary side effects such as headache or mild nausea. Rarely, more serious reactions can occur, which is why infusions are only given in a supervised setting.

No. There is no evidence that IV iron infusions cause weight gain. In fact, correcting iron deficiency often helps improve energy, exercise tolerance, and overall wellbeing.

Some people notice improvements in energy within a few days, while for others it may take a couple of weeks as your body builds new red blood cells.

Most patients begin to notice improvements in energy, focus, and overall wellbeing within a few weeks. Your clinician will also assess your symptoms and review your follow-upbloodwork to confirm that your iron stores are improving and that the treatment is havingthe desired effect.

Yes. Most patients can resume their usual activities right after the infusion.

Your provider will give you a follow-up blood test requisition, and it’s best to wait 6–8weeks after your infusion before repeating bloodwork. Testing too soon can showartificially high ferritin levels because your body has not yet fully incorporated the iron.Checking at the 6–8 week mark gives the most accurate picture of your iron stores andhelps your clinician determine whether any further treatment is needed.

Ferritin rises differently for each person. If you are anemic, most of the iron will first beused to rebuild hemoglobin, so ferritin may not rise significantly until anemia improves. Ifyou are iron-deficient without anemia, ferritin usually increases by about 10 points forevery 100 mg of IV iron - so a 1,000 mg IV iron infusion often raises ferritin by around 100 points.‍Your levels can drop again over time, especially if the underlying cause (such as heavyperiods or chronic blood loss) is ongoing. Maintaining good dietary iron intake andaddressing the root cause can help prevent recurrence.

Many patients maintain healthy iron levels for months to years after a single infusion if theunderlying cause of deficiency is resolved. If ferritin begins to fall below 50–100 and youexperience symptoms such as fatigue, low energy, brain fog, or shortness of breath, another infusion may be appropriate. While lab values are important, your symptoms often remain the most reliable guide. Your healthcare provider can help determine the right timing for repeat treatment.

It depends on your situation. Many people are advised to continue a low, well-tolerateddose of oral iron after an infusion to help maintain iron stores and prevent a recurrence ofdeficiency. If oral iron causes side effects, you can stop taking it; if you tolerate it well,taking it every other day can be helpful, especially if you have ongoing blood loss (such asheavy periods). If the cause of your iron deficiency has resolved, you may not need tocontinue supplementation. Your healthcare provider can give you the most appropriaterecommendation based on your specific circumstances.

In most cases, infusions can be scheduled within 1–2 weeks. We will do our best to accommodate urgent requests sooner if possible.

Most extended health insurance plans cover IV iron products under prescription drugbenefits. The infusion suite fee may also be eligible for reimbursement through a HealthSpending Account or “Out-of-Hospital Nursing Coverage”, depending on your plan. You will receive a detailed receipt that you can submit to your insurer for reimbursement.
